What is CAPF ?

Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) is a primary police organisation in India,Which consist of 5 forces Under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Government of India.

The five forces are as follows

  1. CRPF
  2. ITBP
  3. SSB
  4. BSF
  5. CISF

These five forces have different Roles and functions

1) CRPF

Stands for Central Reserve Police Force , It was formed on 27 July 1939,During its existence it was called as Crown Representative’s Police, After Indian Independence it became Central Reserve Police Force.

Motto– Service and Loyalty

Primary role – It’s primary role is to assist the State and Union Territories Police to maintain Law and Order and look after Internal Security of the Country.

It has 246 Battalions,  (including 208 executive Bns, 6 Mahila Bns, 15 RAF Bns, 10 CoBRA Bns, 5 Signal Bns and 1 Special Duty Group, 1 Parliament Duty Group.With 313,634 Personnel.

RAF: It was established in 1991 under the operational command of CRPF ,10 Battalions of CRPF have been reoriented for tackling communal riots in the country.

COBRA: It was established in year 2008 ,10 Battalions of CRPF who are highly trained in jungle warfare are raised to fight against Naxalite.

2) ITBP

Stands for Indo- Tibetan Border Police Raised on 24 October 1962 after the Chinese Attack. ITBP deployment is along Indo-Tibetan border. They are  professionally trained in mountaineers and skiers.

Motto– Valour – Determination – Devotion to Duty

Primary role-It’s primary role is to look after Indo-China border and Stop Smuggling and illegal immigration. It has 90,000 active Personnel.

3) SSB

Stands for Sashastra Seema Bal raised in year 1963 ,It’s Old name was Special Service Bureau.

Motto– Service Security and Brotherhood

Primary role-It’s primary role is to look after Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan Border and also stop Smuggling and illegal immigration. It has 73 Battalions,with 76,337 active troops.

4) BSF

Stands for Border Security Force formed on 1 December 1965, This force consist of Air Wing ,Marine Wing ,Artillery and Commando Units.

It is World largest Border Gaurding force .BSF is the “First Line of Defence” of country.

Motto– Duty unto Death

Primary role: It’s primary role is to Gaurd Border between Indo-Pakistan ,Indo-Bangladesh and Stop Smuggling and illegal immigration.

5) CISF

Stands for Central Industrial Security Force,It was setup on 10 march 1969.

Motto– Protection and Security

Primary role– It’s primary function is to monitor the Industrial complexes of Government of India. CISF is currently providing security cover to nuclear installations, space establishments, airports, seaports, power plants, sensitive Government buildings and ever heritage monuments.
